I too was sorry to see Cape Verde go. And Curacao. And Canada. Donna and I spent the weekend in NYC, attending a couple of shows (Ragtime and Death of a Salesman). I was in the hotel elevator when I woman got on with a Canada shirt. A man later got on and expressed his condolences to her. "Are you Canadian?" she asked. "No," he said, "I just wish I were these days." (I understood the sentiment.)

My wife was so excited earlier this week to learn that “Country Roads” is big in the World Cup. We heard it sung years ago in a pub in Dublin. When John Denver died, one of our grumpier colleagues was poking fun at Denver ‘s music. So I dialed his number many times and left a voicemail: a John Denver song.

There were rumors that H.J. Deutschendorf Jr. briefly attended school in Hobbs, N.M., as did I. Never could verify that. But still, he was one of us.
